Mentoring plays a substantial role for us whose professions revolve around the arts and other related sectors. Those who went to college can identify a person or two who acted as their mentor throughout their college years. 

I’ve had several music mentors (my primary art form), and they typically fall into one of two categories: those who taught me the art of making music, and those who gave me possibilities to grow in music. 

I have several mentors that taught me music 4 of which gave me private piano lessons when I was 9 up until I was a sophomore in college. Each mentor helped me become what I am now, but there is 1 mentor that stood out among rest. My three music mentors are more focused on technique while my mentor in high school concentrated on my gift for songwriting since she herself is a songwriter as well. Rather than just take me through a system, she took an interest in me as a musician and sought to develop me as an artist. 

As a composition major in college, I also had private instruction with two composition professors – and again, one of the two stood out as a mentor in music. He took note of my strengths and weaknesses as a composer, and challenged me in specific ways to help me grow. He wasn’t just a teacher, but also a private coach, willing to deal with my human side, my attitude problems and my meltdowns in the process. 

There were also some mentors along the way who didn’t really teach me music, but recognized the gift and made room for it. As a young man of music I spent most of my time in the church and the people in the choir allowed me to use the musical and recording instruments which gave me room to develop my skills and learn from my shortcomings. These people were my private cheerleaders, but even more than that, they had a hand in building a platform of success under me. 

In thinking back on my music mentors, two realizations stand out. First of all, concerning the mentors themselves – the ones who affected me most were the ones who took a personal interest in me and in my growth, both as a musician and as a person. Second – looking back at my growth, I believe my mentors played more of a role in my education than my college studies..Even though some of my teachers and mentors were in the college scenario, it was the personal attention that helped me develop in music, far more than the classes, homework or tests. College played a role but my music mentors made the variation in my growth.

For hundreds and even thousands of years, and precisely whatever type it may be, apprenticeships have been around.  Way back to the very first days of civilization, apprenticeships have been used for training skilled craft practitioners of the next generation.

Vocational trades for example baking, electrical work, pipefitting are professions that greatly needs apprenticeships in our contemporary world.  Apprentices learn by working alongside and helping a master craftsman.  Then they are qualified to operate on their own as they finished their training and has graduated.
